Walmart and Google have announced the launch of a new shopping experience built on Google’s Gemini AI technology.
The new service will allow Walmart and Sam’s Club shoppers to use the Gemini AI-powered conversational assistant to discover products, receive personalized recommendations, and complete purchases in the Gemini app.
When shoppers ask a question—for example about available camping equipment—Gemini will automatically surface relevant Walmart products.
Customers can link their Walmart accounts to the new AI platform for enhanced personalization. It will store their purchasing history, combine new items with those already in their Walmart or Sam’s Club carts, and retain all their Walmart+ and Sam’s Club membership benefits.
The platform will also offer customers fast delivery, with “hundreds of thousands of locally curated products delivered in under three hours and as fast as 30 minutes,” Walmart said.
The platform will initially launch in the United States, before being rolled out internationally.
This partnership follows a similar deal that Walmart made with OpenAI last October to allow customers to complete purchases directly within ChatGPT.
John Furner, president and CEO of Walmart U.S., said: “The transition from traditional web or app search to agent-led commerce represents the next great evolution in retail. We aren’t just watching the shift, we are driving it. We want to help customers get what they need and want, when and where they want it. Partnering with Google to bring the Walmart experience directly into Gemini is another step toward creating seamless shopping experiences for customers and members that are more intuitive and personal than ever before.”
Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, said: “AI can improve every step of the consumer journey, from discovery to delivery. Walmart is an innovator in retail and we are excited to partner with them on a new open standard to make agentic commerce a reality. Customers will soon be able to experience everything they love about Walmart directly in the Gemini app.”
The retail sector will be watching closely as Walmart and Google attempt to further integrate agentic commerce—a model where conversational AI can directly drive sales transactions.
If the move proves successful, the impact on Walmart’s workforce is likely to be significant, with customer service roles moving from traditional manual checkout and sales tasks towards customer engagement, technology management, and data-driven services.
