Launched in July 2015, Amazon Prime Day is an annual promotion offered by the retail giant celebrating its anniversary. The event features exclusive deals for Amazon Prime members on a variety of products from Amazon itself as well as top brands that sell on the site. Prime Day typically lasts for 48 hours and includes a combination of reduced prices on select products and “lightning deals,” which are extremely discounted items available for a limited time.
Prime Day is designed to reward Amazon Prime members, and deals are only available to those with a membership. That includes all Prime members, whether you pay the $14.99 monthly cost, $139 annual cost, a discounted rate or are in your free trial period.
Amazon Prime Day is available for shoppers located in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Egypt, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, the United States and the United Kingdom.
Amazon has announced that Prime Day 2024 will take place on July 16 and 17. You can keep an eye on the retailer’s Amazon Prime Day hub page for the latest announcements.
In previous years, including 2023, Amazon hosted a second deal even in October. As of writing, Amazon has not announced plans for a similar offering in 2024.
Prime Day can be a great time to score great prices on all sorts of products from the online retailer, from books and e-readers to home goods and more. You can typically expect exceptionally good rates on products manufactured by Amazon itself, such as the Amazon Echo, Kindle and Fire TV.
Other deals to look out for include technology like televisions, smart home devices and tech accessories. Amazon will release deals to watch out for ahead of Prime Day on its website as well.
In addition to discounts and promotions on Prime Day itself, many Amazon sellers release special deals ahead of the event. If you are shopping for a low price on a particular item, it’s a good idea to monitor prices in the weeks leading up to Prime Day for any cuts. You can also follow the Amazon Prime Day hub for announcements related to special early Prime Day promotions.
Amazon Prime Day can be a good time to buy select products, but you need the right strategy to get the most out of the event. For one, be sure to do your research on standard prices for the item you’re shopping for and competitor rates so you can compare them to Prime Day costs and ensure you are getting a good deal.
Additionally, using the right credit card when you check out on Prime Day can put even more money back in your pocket. Many of the best credit cards for online shopping give shoppers the opportunity to earn points or cash back on their Amazon purchases, which can then be spent on future travel, shopping or other redemptions.
In particular, the Prime Visa credit card can be a good choice. New cardholders get a $100 Amazon gift card upon approval, which can be used to fund your Prime Day purchases. Plus, you’ll earn 5% cash back on all your Amazon purchases.
If the Prime Card isn’t for you, there are still some great options to choose from. The Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards Credit Card could be a good alternative. It offers cardholders 3% cash back in a category of their choice, and online shopping is an available category. (Note: there’s a $2,500 quarterly spending cap on the card’s 3% and 2% category purchases, after which you’ll earn 1% back.) Better yet, users can change their choice category once per month, so if you don’t spend as much on online shopping other times of year, you can swap to a higher earning category for your budget.
Amazon Prime Day is a two-day event, but deals are not necessarily limited to that time period. This year, Prime Day occurs on July 16 and 17.
Note that you might also be able to score discounts and promotions ahead of the event. Amazon also periodically offers what it calls “lightning deals,” which are short-term promotions that might be available for as little as a few hours.
As of writing, Amazon has not announced a Prime Day event for October 2024. That said, Amazon did feature a deals event in October 2023, so it’s possible the merchant could announce a similar deals day later this year.
Historically, Amazon has offered more than one Prime Day event in both July and October. As of June 25, 2024, Amazon has only announced one Prime Day event this year on July 16 and 17.
